Firm Profile
Since 1995, Coburn Architecture has been designing residential and commercial spaces throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, Westchester, New Jersey, and the Eastern End of Long Island. To respond to increased client demand for interior design and decoration services once the architecture of a project is completed, we opened a full-service Interior Design department in 2005. We are currently working on both residential and commercial Interiors projects.
Our strength lies in residential architecture adapted for modern living and commercial spaces crafted for collaboration and productivity. Equally adept in historic renovation and modern design, we harness our substantial practical experience and sophisticated design sensibility to arrive at imaginative solutions for our clients. We strive to strike a balance between economic feasibility and our clients' needs and tastes, and in the end, create spaces that seem effortless.
As a mid-sized firm, we have the ability to provide daily, hands-on project management at the principal level. In this way we cultivate a productive dialog with clients and are able to execute on the quick turnaround they often require.
Brendan R. Coburn, AIA [x]
Brendan Coburn established his practice with his father in the fall of 1994 and then went out on his own in 1997. As the firm's founder and lead architect he has been responsible for designing a wide variety of residential projects and, more recently, several noteworthy commercial and institutional projects including the award-winning headquarters of Waterfront Media.
Brendan's work balances design simplicity with the needs of the client, the available technical means, and the realities of budget and time. His residential work has been featured in Metropolitan Home, Interior Design, Fine Homebuilding and Men's Health Living.
Brendan was born in Boston and spent his early childhood in Winchester, Massachusetts. His parents moved to Brooklyn in 1972 where he grew up and attended primary and secondary school. Brendan graduated from the University of Virginia in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture. He worked for I.M. Pei and Partners and Rafael Vinoly Architects before leaving for Yale University where he received his Master of Architecture degree in 1994. He continues to educate himself through seminars and courses at Harvard's Graduate School of Design and New York University.
Outside of the office, Brendan serves on the Board of the Brooklyn Central YMCA where he is the chair of the buildings committee. He is a board member of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and serves on the Brooklyn Builds awards committee. In addition, he serves on the Board of St. Boniface Oratory, where he is a member of the buildings and grounds committee.
Brendan is registered in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects and holds a certificate from the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.
Ward K. Welch, AIA [x]
Ward Welch leads the firm's residential practice, focusing on apartments in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and homes in Long Island, Westchester, New Jersey, and upstate New York. In addition, he founded and leads the firm's Interior Design practice, expanding it to include two dedicated designers. His work has been covered by Interior Design, New York Daily News, and HGTV among others.
Ward joined Coburn in 1999 after working as a project architect and later partner -- at Lancaster, Pennsylvania-based Levengood-Kautter Architects, which specializes in residential and commercial work in historic preservation, as well as traditional and modern design.
Ward grew up on a farm in southern Virginia's tobacco country. Inspired by the Victorian architecture of his home town, he pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture at the University of Virginia. Upon graduation in 1989, he spent two years at LKA and then returned to UVa to obtain his Master of Architecture degree in 1993. Ward served as president of the School of Architecture and remains active in the alumni association as a trustee of his class. In addition, he has served as an adjunct professor at the Pennsylvania School of Art and Design, and as architectural advisor to the Lancaster Alliance to develop plans to refurbish downtown open space.
He currently serves on the Steering Committee of the Young Associates of the Morgan Library in New York and is a member of the 1832 Society of the Merchant House Museum, which plans fundraising events for the museum.
Jason Boutin, AIA [x]
Jason Boutin manages the firm's commercial and institutional practice, including retail and office renovations, as well as schools, theaters, and libraries. In addition, he serves as the master scheduler of all jobs within the office.
Jason combines his technical knowledge of the wide variety of building types found in New York with keen design team management skills to bring large-scale projects to life. His work has been published by Interiors & Sources Magazine.
Before joining Coburn in 2000, Jason worked for New York's Butler Rogers Baskett where he gained substantial experience in significant installations in both the commercial and institutional realms.
Jason received his Bachelor of Science in Building Design and his Bachelor of Architecture simultaneously from Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute in 1994.
He is a co-founder and project coordinator of Boxworks, an NGO formed to develop disaster relief housing in Haiti. He has also served as a volunteer organizer of CANstruction, a charity competition for the New York Food Bank.
A member of the American Institute of Architects, Jason is registered in New York.
Coburn Architecture is located in Brooklyn's historic waterfront district in the heart of DUMBO. Our collaborative team of 10 consists of three principals, five licensed architects, two interior designers, and assorted draftspersons, model builders, and administrative staff. Together our office designs apartments, lofts, row houses, and suburban and country houses, as well as office and retail locations -- and select institutional spaces including libraries, theaters, and schools.
We maintain relationships with qualified consulting engineers, both structural and mechanical, who are well-versed in the systems required for most new construction types. In addition, we have extensive experience in the renovation of landmark buildings, with particular strength in row houses.
Our work has been covered by BusinessWeek, Metropolitan Home, Interior Design, Fine Homebuilding, Interiors & Sources, The New York Times, New York Daily News, and HGTV, among others. In addition, our projects have been featured in The New American Dream: Living Well in Small Houses, published by Monacelli Press, The Kitchen Idea Book and Home Workspace Idea Book, published by Taunton Press, and Essential Home published by Ryland, Peters, Small Publishers.
