We designed the interiors of this two-bedroom, post-war apartment on Manhattan's Upper East Side for a busy career couple based on their combined ba tzu and jyo hsing Feng Shui charts.

A neutral palette showcases the couple's contemporary and abstract art collection, including works by Beatricia Sagar, Rodney Durso, Susan Terry. A custom sofa covered in a cotton and wool weave receives a splash of color from a cut-velvet throw. The side chairs are by Jonathan Adler; pillows are covered in Donghia's Carly jacquard. The floor lamp is by Visual Comfort and the carpet is from the Rug Company.

Vintage objects, such as an antique brass sake table, are combined with others inspired by nature, including organically shaped pottery and a glass-topped coffee table with an antler base. Two mid-century cabinets with burled-wood panels are joined under a limestone top to create a much needed credenza. The bronze sculpture by New York artist Christopher Totaro and a Robert Gardner photograph are framed between deco bronze table lamps by Visual Comfort.

In the master bedroom a custom, quilted headboard extends from floor to ceiling to soften the straight lines in the existing space. Wall-mounted contemporary reading lamps are paired with vintage chinois side tables finished in a navy, high-gloss laminate. The custom window treatment was fashioned by Katie's Creations out of fabric by Lee Jofa; bedding is by Thomas O'Brien. The built-ins, which provide substantial storage while occupying minimal floor space, are custom, and the rug is from Tufenkian.

The kitchen cabinetry is fronted in frosted glass and the backsplash is glass mosaic by Bisazza. The countertop is Pietra Cardoza and the floor is slate.

Walnut cabinetry defines the bathroom and is covered in a limestone vanity top. Towels are by Thomas O'Brien.
